How to find the best chiropractor in Grand Rapids & Wayland

Five things worth checking before you schedule — from training and certifications to how your first visit and insurance benefits are handled.

The best chiropractors keep training and certifications current

When people search for the best chiropractor in Grand Rapids or Wayland, what they're really looking for is a doctor whose training matches their problem. Every licensed chiropractor completes a Doctor of Chiropractic program, but post-graduate training varies a lot from one office to the next. If you are dealing with a stubborn problem — long-standing back or neck pain, a past injury, or postural changes — it's worth asking whether the doctor has advanced certification beyond licensure.

Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) is one example. It is a research-heavy, corrective technique focused on restoring healthy spinal alignment, and relatively few Michigan chiropractors hold the certification. Drs. Aaron and Gretchen DeYoung practice in our Grand Rapids office, where both doctors are certified in CBP, and Dr. Lauren Richards has completed advanced CBP training in our Wayland office.

Ask how they diagnose — not just how they treat

A good first visit starts with listening: your health history, your goals, and a thorough examination of posture, alignment and function. Imaging such as x-rays is sometimes used to assess spinal alignment before a corrective plan is recommended.

Be cautious of any office that prescribes the same visit routine before they have examined you. Your spine and your history are unique, and your plan should be too.

Know what your first visit includes

When you compare offices, ask exactly what happens at the first appointment: how long it lasts, whether the doctor reviews findings with you that same day, and whether you leave with a plan or just an adjustment. At DeYoung Chiropractic, your first visit includes a consultation, an examination and a clear explanation of findings before any care plan is discussed.

Check insurance handling up front

If you plan to use insurance, ask whether the office verifies your benefits before your visit. Our team verifies your chiropractic benefits before your first appointment so you know what is covered and what your portion will be — send us a message or call our office and we'll take care of it.

Read reviews, but read them carefully

Patient reviews tell you how an office actually runs: whether visits start on time, whether the doctor explains things, whether people feel better. We're proud of the reviews patients have left for both of our locations — you can read recent ones on our reviews page.
